Geneafinder: the improved tree visualization tool

©️Geneafinder

On the agenda: more customization options, a centered or expanded view with or without your ancestors and descendants according to your preferences, as well as the ability to directly modify your genealogical tree!

Manage your genealogical tree view settings according to your preferences

When you access the genealogical tree visualization tool on Geneafinder, your tree is displayed with default settings that you can customize as you wish.

To access the settings window, click on the gear icon on the left side of the screen or the one at the top of the page.

First, choose the root person of your tree. The root person can be the first individual, the youngest, the oldest, or the person of your choice (define by typing their name and selecting them from the dropdown menu).

Next, define the display order of ascending couples (man-woman or woman-man), from left to right or top to bottom

Then, set the reading direction of your genealogical tree. A "horizontal" tree will show ancestors on the left side of the screen and descendants on the right. Whereas a "vertical" tree will present ancestors towards the top and descendants towards the bottom of the screen.

Finally, choose the number of generations in ancestry and descent that you wish to see. For a more centered and readable view of your tree, we recommend defining 5 generations for ancestry. But if you want to see your entire tree, enter the maximum number of generations (20).

💡 Note that the defined number of generations starts from your root person.

View, add, or modify information directly from your genealogical tree view

Fill out your tree from the Entry tool or from the Visualization tool of your tree - now it's your choice!

Indeed, you can, with a single click, access information about your ancestors, modify it, or add it directly from your tree.

To view information about a person, it's simple, just click on their name. You will find it directly in the information bar on the right side of your screen.

To modify or add information about a person, click on their name then click on the Pencil icon. You will directly access the Entry tool.

And the big new feature of this update now allows you to add a parent, spouse, or child directly from the visualization space. To do this, it's very simple, choose a root person (from the settings or with a double-click) and click on the empty leaf "Add a...". Our Entry tool opens and you can add all the useful information. Don't forget to save! This new person will appear directly in your tree and will be directly connected to their close relatives.

For the spouse(s) of your root person, click on the right arrow of the leaf to choose which spouse you want to visualize (and thus modify the view of the descent).

Learn to navigate easily in your genealogical tree

Walking through your genealogical tree is a true pleasure, especially when it allows us to see all the research work accomplished.

As mentioned a little earlier, the basis of your navigation at the heart of your genealogical tree will depend mostly on your visualization settings. Once these are defined, here are some tips and tricks to learn how to navigate easily among your ancestors:

- Use the held click of your mouse to move in your tree

- Use your mouse wheel or pad to zoom in or out

- Click once on a person to display their information in the right bar

- Double-click on a person to change the root person

📍 If you get lost in your tree, don't panic! Click on the icon on the left side of your screen to recentering the view on your root person

💡 Additionally and to save time, use the quick search bar in the information bar on the right side of your screen to retrieve a person. They will become your root person.

We regularly receive questions about the colors of the leaves of your genealogical tree on Geneafinder. In fact, these have existed since our beginnings and are meant to help you organize your research: if the color tends towards red, you have little or no information about the person. On the contrary, if the color tends towards green, then you have a lot of information about the person. It is not possible to change them (for now).
