7 tips to resume your genealogy after a long break

Genealogy is a passion, a time-consuming and intoxicating one at that, as the discoveries can be so interesting. But sometimes, life and its constraints, or a certain form of fatigue, invite us to take a break from our research.

Genealogy data and research are so dense that it can be difficult to find your way back after a break. Here are some tips to help you resume your research:

1- Gather and sort your notes and documents:

Gather all the information you have on paper or on your computer to see where you left off last time. Also, take the opportunity to tidy up your notes and create a filing system to keep track of your findings.

2- Review your site or software:

It's also a good time to revisit your genealogy site or software. Update it if necessary. On Geneafinder, use the color code in the tree to resume your research and use the list of your ancestors to see where you left off.

3- Reflect on your goals:

For your "genealogy back to school," reflect on your research goals. Do you want to research a particular branch? Focus on a type of register? Having clear goals will help you resume genealogy with renewed enthusiasm.

4- Establish your research plan:

Also think about developing your research plan. Try to clearly identify the people and/or branches you want to explore as a priority, and define a methodical process for collecting information.

5- Update your skills:

It's always interesting to refresh your genealogy research skills. Use this opportunity to consult guides, books, online courses... You can also join a genealogy group or association to share your discoveries and get advice and resources.

6- Consult new sources:

Don't be afraid to explore new data sources online... Get out of civil status and consult old newspapers, notary or military archives for example. These new resources will help you discover information you didn't find during your previous research.

7- Stay patient:

Genealogy can be a long and sometimes frustrating process. You may encounter obstacles and puzzles along the way. Be patient and persistent!
