updated: February 16, 2026
The Ardennes department is part of the region Grand Est. Located on the border of Belgium, it is surrounded by the departments of the Meuse, of the Marne and of theAisne. Its prefecture is Charleville-Mézières, famous for its Ducal Square, an architectural gem of the 17th century.
Created during the French Revolution in 1790, the department was formed from part of the ancient province of Champagne, the principality of Sedan (attached to France in 1642), as well as portions of the county of Rethel and territories once attached to the Spanish Netherlands. This strategic position as the "shield of France" has made the Ardennes the theater of major conflicts, particularly during the wars of 1870, 1914-1918, and 1939-1945, which has had a direct impact on the preservation of some municipal archives.

🌳 Migrations in the Ardennes
The Ardennes are, par excellence, a transit and melting pot territory. Its migration history is closely linked to the metallurgical industry of the Meuse valley and the vicissitudes of border wars.
- 17th and 18th centuries: before its union with France, Sedan was a major Protestant enclave. The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) caused a massive exodus of artisans and notable families to the Netherlands, Germany (Brandenburg), and England.
Although fewer in number than the Normans, some Ardennais ventured to Canada, often via the Atlantic ports.
- 19th century: Belgian labor is the most constant flow. To work in the forges, foundries of the Meuse valley (Givet, Revin, Fumay), or the slate quarries of Haybes, thousands of Belgian workers (mainly from the province of Namur and Belgian Luxembourg) cross the border. In 1851, foreigners (mostly Belgians) represented a significant portion of the industrial population.
Mechanization pushed the agricultural populations of the southern department (Rethélois and Argonne) towards urban centers like Sedan (textile) and Charleville (metallurgy).
- 20th century: during the Exodus of 1914 and 1940, the Ardennes experienced massive population displacements. In 1940, almost the entire department was evacuated to Deux-Sèvres and Vendée. Many Ardennais never returned, creating unexpected genealogical branches in western France.
To rebuild and restart the industry, the department called on Polish and Italian workers. The latter settled massively in the industrial basins.
From the 1950s onwards, the Ardennes industry recruited from North Africa (Algeria, Morocco) and Turkey to make up for the lack of labor in heavy metallurgy.
