The Hautes-Pyrénées department was created during the French Revolution in 1790 from the former provinces of Gascony, Bigorre, and the Pays des Quatre-Vallées. The department is bordered by the departments of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, of the Gers, of the Haute-Garonne and the province of Huesca in Spain.
