Good to know:
Parish registers began around 1545 with the Council of Trent. This required the keeping of baptism, marriage, and burial records, which were stored in the relevant parish. Since 1820, a copy has been kept in the diocesan archives.
Within the diocesan archives, the census of parishioners (stato delle anime), by house, provides additional information.
Since 1866, civil registration has been gradually implemented. A copy of the record is kept at the town hall and another at the courthouse (by requesting it from the Public Prosecutor).
Population registers (registre di populazione), kept by town halls, list, by house, family members with their dates of birth, marriage, death, and other observations.
Emigration registers, kept by town halls, list the names, parentage, and destination of people leaving the town.
