Note:
There is no real civil registry in Algeria before 1830. However, it is possible to find marriage and death records and succession records dating from 1592 to 1856 at the National Archives Center in Algiers, where the records of the Sharia courts are kept. Only 2/3 of the civil registry can potentially be consulted, but entire collections are missing for many towns (like Bordj, Bou Arreridj, Saïda, Tiaret...).
As for parish registers, the archives of the Catholic Church in Algeria were sent back by the bishops of Algiers, Constantine and Oran to monasteries of nuns respectively at Nîmes at the Clarisses Monastery, at the Visitation Monastery in Tarascon (whose collection has been digitized and indexed by the GAMT) and at Taulignan at the Dominican Nuns.
These free online registers allow you to access the civil registry of several dozen Algerian towns (for the departments of Algiers, Constantine and Oran) between 1830 and 1919 for European and Jewish populations. You can browse birth, marriage and death registers with their decennial and annual tables, as well as annual tables of judgments and recognition and divorce records. A name search engine is available for the period 1830-1904.
The military records in Algeria can also be consulted for the period 1866-1921.
