Gedcom Standard for Genealogy: Everything You Need to Know to Fill Out Your Genealogy Tree

What is the Gedcom format and standard?

The Gedcom format and standard were developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) to facilitate the easy exchange of computerized genealogy data between different software and websites.

We refer to "Gedcom" as the abbreviation for GEnealogical Data COMmunication - that is, Genealogical Data Communication.

Gedcom files are simply text files that genealogy software and websites can integrate, read, and save. They allow you to group all information about a person, a family, events, sources, or even notes.

These files are encoded in several ways: in ANSEL, ANSI, Macintosh, MS/DOS, UTF-8... Note that most current software (including Geneafinder) recommends using UTF-8 to use all existing characters.

The Structure of Gedcom Files

You will first find a header section that groups information such as the website or software used to create this gedcom, the encoding format, or the language used.

Next, when creating a person, a unique identifier will be assigned to them (INDI tag)  and their information will be nested under their identifier. This way, they will be properly linked to their events and dates.

A family is created through a link that connects two people (two possible tags: FAMS for parents or FAMC for children).

In addition to individual or family identifiers, Gedcom also consists of several tags that you can find as fields to fill in on your website or genealogy software.

Here is the list, from the Genealogy Guide:

Fractional values for a CONC tag must always be split at a non-space. If the value is divided on a space, the space will be lost during concatenation. This is due to the treatment spaces receive as a GEDCOM delimiter, many GEDCOM values are cut from trailing spaces and some systems search for the first non-space beginning after the tag to determine the start of the value.

Assume that the rest of the leading spaces must be part of the value.
