The Oise department was created during the French Revolution in 1790. It consists of part of the former province of Île-de-France and takes its name from the river that flows through it. It is bordered by the departments of Somme, the Aisne, the Seine-et-Marne, the Val-d'Oise, the Eure, and the Seine-Maritime.
