The Alpes-Maritimes department, as we know it today, was created in 1860. From 1793 to 1814, the former Alpes-Maritimes department consisted of the County of Nice and the Principality of Monaco. The Alpes-Maritimes are bordered by the Var, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence  Italy and the Mediterranean Sea.
