Updated: January 23, 2025
This is THE big question everyone asks, and it’s legitimate.
To put it simply, yes, registering on Geneafinder and using our basic tools are free, unlimited, and will remain so.
This means you can, for free: - create a family tree or import an existing tree (in .ged format) without size limits,
- view your tree and ancestors,
- benefit from automatic backup on our servers, - export your tree to save it on your computer (in .ged format or as a .pdf booklet).
You also have access to our free tools: - our unique missing date estimator, - our direct links to departmental archive websites in France, - our multi-database name search engine that allows you to search for an ancestor by name in one click across several dozen genealogical databases,
- a dedicated space for adding sources and notes to organize your research, - departmental cheat sheets to guide you, accessible in your Resources section.
More advanced tools are available with a Premium subscription. Check out our offers to learn more.
Here is the list of tools available to you after registration:
Complete the tree: this tool allows you to find the list of all individuals in your tree sorted alphabetically, by date, or by color (red = little information, green = a lot of information). This is where you can add people to your tree or click on a name to complete the information. You can add nearly 40 different events, create family links, add witnesses…
View the tree: this is the tool that allows you to visualize your tree. Choose your visualization parameters in your profile tab (in the top bar) and browse your tree according to the root person chosen to see their ancestors or descendants. The colored boxes help you organize your research (red = little information, green = a lot of information). By clicking on a person, all their life data is displayed on the right. A search engine for people in your tree saves you time.
Import a .ged file: ideal if you already have a genealogy tree on another site or genealogy software. No need to start over! Export this tree in .ged (Gedcom) format and import it on Geneafinder to continue where you left off.
Export the tree: this function allows you to download your tree and all its data in .ged format to your computer. It is useful for saving your genealogy, for using another site or software, for sharing it, or for passing it on. You can also export your genealogy as a .pdf booklet. You will find all the information about your ancestors, classified by generation.
Public archives: access in one click to the websites of the departmental archives of France. Department sites mentioned in your tree are displayed first.
Edit sources and notes: perfect for organizing your research, you can note and classify all the information and sources useful to your genealogy. These will be exported at the same time as your tree data in your .ged file.
Date estimator: our unique algorithm helps you define the search ranges for birth, marriage, and death dates of your ancestors born before 1900. The more complete your tree, the more relevant this algorithm will be.
Name search : search an ancestor by name in one click on several dozen genealogical databases and digital libraries. No need to type your query on many sites to access online tree data and records from genealogy associations.
Useful features to enrich your genealogy are also available with a Premium subscription:

Of course! Here are some good reasons to sign up and create/import your genealogy tree:
- First of all, Geneafinder is a 100% French genealogy site. We are Breton, more precisely! And we are committed to creating innovative and useful services. Our technical support is available to assist you.
- Your genealogy workspace is protected : Geneafinder is a private, non-collaborative genealogy site. No other user has access to the data in your tree. Your data remains your property. You can choose to work with others using trusted members you select through our Duo and Family offers.
- Your genealogy is backed up and easily accessible : since the hosting of your tree is free, why not have an additional backup? You can access your tree from any device and anywhere on the internet.
- Finally, the Geneafinder adventure is just beginning… We are developing tools that can link your tree to reliable information sources. We are investing in research projects. This will allow you to access all the richness of the archives.
Yes - Geneafinder is a non-collaborative online genealogy site. No other user than you has access to your tree data. You thus get the advantages of genealogy software with the accessibility of an online site.
However, since data sharing is useful for advancing in genealogy and to prevent your tree data from being collected by other users without compensation, we have developed a secure collaborative workspace, available with a paid subscription (DUO or FAMILY plan).
Depending on your subscription, you can share your tree for viewing and/or editing:
- Viewing sharing allows invited people to only view (without the possibility of modification) your tree - starting from the root person and the branch of your choice.
- Editing sharing allows invited people to modify your tree - starting from the root person and the branch of your choice.
It is not possible to have multiple genealogy trees on a single account.
One account with one email address = one genealogy tree.
On the other hand, you can create as many accounts as you want, provided you use a different email address for each account creation.
Good to know: our team subscription system (DUO and FAMILY offers) allows you to share your tree for reading or writing with people of your choice. A user, with a single account, can be admitted to multiple teams and have access to multiple trees and workspaces. Thus, they can access multiple trees, for reading or writing.
Yes and no.
No: since Geneafinder is a non-collaborative online genealogy site, you cannot access the data contained in our users' trees (unless you are part of a team!).
But yes: via our free Name Search Tool, we allow you to access search results from several dozen online genealogical databases with a single click (note that we do not bypass paid access. You may need a subscription to these sites to access the entirety of their content).
Unfortunately not, there is no professional genealogist on the Geneafinder team. However, we provide you with many useful resources to guide you (see the Resources tab in your workspace) and we can direct you and connect you with the right people if needed.
Find useful resources in the Resources space located at the top of each page, on our blog as well as on our social networks (Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest).
Find on each top of page a help icon. This informs you about the use of our features. If this help doesn't answer your question, contact the support team by email: support.geneafinder@doptim.eu
